Lake District, also known as the Lakes or the Lakelands, is one of the most popular parks in the North West UK region. Every year, tourists and locals alike swarm the parks and playgrounds just to see a glimpse of this stunning beauty.

The Lakes is a place of sheer, unspoiled paradise. Since the arrival of the Romantic poets back in the 19th century, Lake District’s postcard panorama of rugged hilltops, glittering lakes, and mountain tarns has been stirring into the minds and imaginations of many visitors. In 2017, Lake District became a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unprecedented hill-farming culture.

Did you know that this paradise is home to some of England’s stunning hidden parks and adventures as well? Here you can experience almost everything—ice climbing, skyrunning, white-water kayaking, and frozen waterfalls. But what really makes the Lake District is its fabulous playgrounds that every kid and kids-at-heart will love.

Brockhole, Windermere – Adventure Playground

The Adventure Playground in Brockhole is ideal for children of all ages—from toddlers to teenagers. It has separate play areas for different ages and a wide array of equipment from turret to climb into, as well as tunnels to climb through. There is a galleon boat in the toddler area, where you can sail your own boat for fun. Recently, they have added and built the Mountain Towers, consisting of 10 towers for older children.

There are plenty of grassy areas and picnic benches, both covered and uncovered, to bring lunch and eat regardless of the weather condition. Alternatively, there are cafes and an onsite restaurant to buy your food and drinks from. There is no entrance fee to this playground—just pay for parking. Remember, though, that during the holiday season, parking maybe a little more expensive.

Rookery Woods – Keswick Climbing Wall

Rookery Woods playground is specifically designed for kids eight years old and younger. This climbing wall has a zip wire, low ropes, archery, traditional games, sheep hunt, a maze, orienteering grounds, and nature area. This is definitely the place if you want to tire out your little adventurer.

The entrance is only for £5 and also good even on damp days. Be sure to book in advance as the playground can get really crowded on peak season. On-site, there are a lot of activities to get immersed in—from kayaking, canoeing ghyll scrambling to abseiling and high ropes. Plus, there is the Hungry Heifer Cafe set inside the climbing wall.

Newby Bridge – Fell Foot Park

Fell Foot, on the shore of Windermere, is a National Trust site that is in close proximity to Park Cliffe. Fell Foot is a relatively large park site with lush grassy park backing on the meadow. This adventure playground is a great place for young kids, but also as equally good for the older ones.

There is a wide place to play games, such as hide and seek, frisbee, or capture the flag. Recently, Fell Foot is home to an outdoor centre where paddleboards, kayaks and canoes are available for rent. If you have your own, feel free to bring them along and launch onto the lake. This site has a cafe and a small shop to get your ice cream fix from on a hot day.
